Tropical Fruit Tree "Pili nut"
Canarium ovatum



Characteristics - the pili nut is a tropicalfruit bearer originally from the Philippines recently introduced in Brazil where it is cultivated only by collectors. It is an evergreen treegenerally dimorphic, 10-18 m.tall Leaves compound pinnate, from 25-38 cm, with 3-5 pairs of leaflets, glabrous on both surfaces, brilliant and chartaceous, 6-24 cm in length, a rosy color when new.Flowers are small, generally unisexual, arranged in axillary racemes terminal and long -pedunculated, form almost all year long .The fruits are ellipsoid drupes, with a thin, non edible pulp, a hard endocarpand endosperm (nut)covered in a brown film with a slightly sweet flavor, rich in oil; they mature mainly in the spring.

Uses - The nuts are consumed in natura or after being toasted. They are greatly appreciated in their region of origin. One single plant, full grown, can produce up to 10.000 fruits each year.
