Tropical Fruit Tree "Mata-olho"
Pouteria gardneriana

Characteristics - Pouteria gardneriana is a fruit tree not under cultivation and rare in nature in its natural habitat, from Piaui to Rio Grande do Sul, in gallery forests and generally near sea level. It is a semi-deciduous or deciduous tree, lactiferous, from 10-15 m tall, with new branches pubescent. Leaves subcoriaceous, glabrous on both surfaces when mature and pubescent on the inferior surface when new, brilliant, denser on the exptremities of the branches , 15-20 cm long, with a tomentose petiole of 4-5 mm. Flowers arranged on thin, leafless branches or at the foliar axiles, in fascicles, form in November – December. Fruits are piriform, with a carnose, sweet-flavored pulp, 1-2 seeds. They mature in February and March.

Uses - The fruits are consumed, exclusively, in their natural state and not appreciated much.

Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
