Characteristics - The marmelada or purui is a rarely cultivated fruit bearer, however it is frequent in nature in its natural habitat, the Amazon region central Brazil to Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, in the dry land forest, gallery forests and brushy areas. It is a large shrub or small semi-decuduous tree, dimorphic, 1-6 m tall. Leaves chartaceous, glabrous, from 8-25 cm long, with stipules interpetiolar, triangular, with the petiole 0.5-1.5 cm long. Flowers white and terminal; on the female plants solitary or in pairs (photo on right) and on the male plants in glomerules that form in September and October. Fruits are berries, globose, up to 40 g, brown with a carnose pulp and a sweet flavor, maturing November – January.
Uses - The fruits are consumed in their natural state and enjoyed locally.
Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
