

Characteristics – The licury palm is a fruit bearer, cultivated as an ornamental. Native to the east side of the Sao Francisco River, in the states of Bahia, northern Minas Gerais, Sergipe, Alagoas and Pernambuco. It is of frequent occurance in the scrublands (caatinga). A solitary palm, 3-10 m tall. The top half of the trunk is covered with persistent leaf bases, arranged in 5 vertical rows that are slightly twisted (helicoidal). Leaves are pinnate, 15-30 concurrently, with 80-130 pairs of pinnae, irregularly distributed in groups of 2-5 and arranged on various planes. Inflorescences interfoliar with 34-78 rachis. Fruits have a fibro-carnose mesocarp (pulp), with a slightly sweet flavor.
Uses – The fruits, both mesocarp (pulp) and nut, are consumed in their natural state.
Propagation – Propagated by seeds.
