Syagrus flexuosa



Characteristics - Syagrus flexuosa is a fruit bearer, occasionally cultivated as an ornamental, native to the savannas (cerrado) of central Brazil and of the states of Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul. It is a cespitose palm, 2-4 m tall with an arching, ringed trunk, growing in clumps of 5-10 stems. Leaves are pinnate, 2-3 m long, 7-15, concurrent per stem, with 70-80 pair of pinnae, irregularly distributed, in groups of 2-4, arranged on various planes on the rachis. Inflorescences interfoliarwith 16-20rachises and small, creamy, bisexual flowers. Fruits have a fibro-mucilagenous mesocarp with a slightly sweet flavor.

Uses -The fruits are consumed in their natural state both the mesocarp as well as the nut.

Propagation - Propagated by seeds.
