Red Latan Palm Tree

The endangered and rare Red Latan Palm (Latania lontaroides) slowly grows up to 40 feet and up to 16 feet in diameter. It is native to the Island of Reunion where they are being threatened to extinction. Like the Bismarck Palm, the Red Latan Palm has stiff blue to blue-silver costapalmate fan shaped leaves, giving them a unique appearance. Young leaves of the Red Latan Palm have distinguishing reddish color to the stems. With only a few surviving individuals on Reunion Island, the Red Latan Palm make excellent pot plant when young and even more eye catching when mature.

The minimum temperature this palm tree can withstand is roughly 24-28 degrees F. Latania lontaroides enjoys full sun with regular waterings. Well draining soil is recommended. This palm also commands attention with its gray, lightly ringed, swollen base trunk. Other synonyms for this palm tree include Latania borbonica and Latania commersonii.
